Irvine Welsh, author of Trainspotting, suggests five novels about addiction. 

Arbitrage, starring Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon, is both out in theaters and available for rental on iTunes. I don’t know that this will happen anytime soon for event pictures, but if smaller, indie productions embrace this practice, it could be an enormous boon both for them and for audiences.
