The Larger World

Are You Pondering What I’m Pondering?

My Dad just entered hospice (at home, not at a facility), which makes this news about former Presidential candidate George McGovern hit extra hard.

I saw the King Tut exhibit at Pacific Science Center yesterday with my Mom. The exhibit lacked some of the iconic items, like Tut’s burial mask, that I remembered from the Treasures of Tutankhamun exhibition in New Orleans in the 1970s. Still, it had other items that I think that exhibit lacked, and it did a reasonable job of presenting the scale of Ancient Egyptian history. I particularly appreciated the artifacts related to the non-royals: scribes, builders, priests. It gave a fuller sense of how Egyptian society was structured. Catch the exhibit before it splits, folks.

During my reading last week, I did find myself having to delete a number of naughty words because it was 6:30, there were kids around, and I didn’t feel like working blue. The exercise did put me in mind of those magnificent shoatbag fuskers, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie:

Mitt Romney announces that he has Dennis Miller’s support. Denny, I think you need to have a little confab with your earlier self, babe.

All hail the new planet in town. It’s orbiting Alpha Centauri and it’s Earth-sized, but before you start looking into a time share, bear in mind that it’s way too close to its star for anything to live on it.

Later.
