So, the Oakland Raiders won a road game, and oh, it would make me happy if I thought I could expect more. Even some Raider reporters who have every right to be jaded are starting to get a little ahead of themselves.

Whenever I catch myself starting to feel slightly good about the Raiders prospects, I remind myself of the immortal words of Dana Scully:

SCULLY:  I have never met anyone so passionate and dedicated to a belief as you. It’s so intense that sometimes it’s blinding. But there are others who are watching you, who know what I know and whereas I can respect and admire your passion, they will use it against you. Mulder, the truth is out there, but so are lies.

Then I remind myself that, good vibes notwithstanding, the Raiders appear likely to win, at most, seven games this year. So while Derek Carr has played above his head the last couple of games, I have to be prepared for him to come down to Earth. And while Amari Cooper looks like a real talent, we’ll have to see how he does as film accumulates and defenses adjust.

I did say at the beginning of the year that if the Raiders were 2-2 or better at the end of September, I’d pay attention. I remain skeptical, but I’ll hold up my end of the deal.
