We’re back on more or less a regular schedule with these things. This is the second of our “3 Ridiculous Things…” looks at the Star Trek movies, looking at the ambitious-but-flawed first picture in the series, ST:TMP.

This is a movie I fell asleep on when I first saw it. It was at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica. I was eight, and the movie was one of my Christmas presents. It’s grown on me since then, and though it’s far from the best of the Star Trek features, I respect and appreciate that it was aiming for something a little more thoughtful than the usual blockbuster fare. It was hard enough to resist the big screen’s run-jump-explosion imperative in 1979. It’s almost impossible now.

You know, it’s kind of funny when you think about it. In the movie, it’s V’ger asking, “Is this all that I am? Is there nothing more?” Today, this is the question that almost every science fiction film made (except perhaps Wall-E and Mad Max: Fury Road), would ask about itself, if it could, at the end.
